“A Diamond is Forever”

March 28, 2007

I was cleaning out my inbox and came across this article on engagement rings–particularly how the whole thing’s just a marketing ploy that’s duped us all.

Well, not me. My wife’s practical :)

Helpful Firefox Extensions When Authoring SWFs and XHTML

March 26, 2007

Just reposting this from my CCNY class.
Here’s a short list of some of the Firefox extensions I use when developing:

If anyone has recommendations of other plugins I should be using, I’d love to hear it.

design:related

March 22, 2007

I thought I’d share a shameless plug for my friend’s up-and-coming social network for designers, design:related. It sports a very clean interface, a growing international user base, and is a nice place to hang up that portfolio piece.

I think part of the challenge with getting designers to comment on work is that critiques should be handled during the design process, not afterwards. I hope to see opportunities for more involvement . . .

I’d also love to see a resources section for designers the includes business forms and possibly advice, as well as perhaps some competitions, but one thing at a time. :)

Check it out.

iPod Battery Replacement

March 14, 2007

ipod.jpg

Ever wonder what’s on the inside of your iPod? I did, and with the battery barely holding a charge on my 4G iPod, I figured I’d save the $65 fee Apple charges and replace the battery myself using one of the cheap battery replacement kits off the Web. I figured doing it myself’d remind me of those physical computing days at ITP–and my enforce my motto of “don’t let an expert do it, become an expert and do it!”

Let me just say, if you have a protective case for your iPod, this option isn’t for you. Trying to pry open the case with a screwdriver left my iPod with several new scars. I don’t care, though, as I figure I’m beating that statistic of modern electronics having only a 2 year shelf life (I also take pride in the fact that my iPod looks like it survives the NYC commute).

The guts of this MP3 player are pretty tightly-packed (the blue rubber above is the HD’s protection). Once it was open, though, it was pretty smooth sailing.

For you Flash Fuse users out there, Fuse 2.1.3 has just been released, as well as FuseFX, an extension to Fuse that allows you to manipulate sound (MixerFX), text (TextFX), and color transforms (ColorFX). You can get them over at the Moses’s Fuse ZigoEngine site.

Beyond Second. Relaunched.

March 7, 2007

Today marks the relaunch of BeyondSecond.com, the Harrisburg photo sharing site that I originally launched with my friend Dave back in 2003. The site was due for a redesign for quite some time, and I think the result not only addresses user requests, but also reflects how much social networking tools have evolved on the Web since we first launched it. My hat’s off to Dave for spending so much of his spare time in the site’s development.
While every other startup is trying to use the social network as a business model and where traditional businesses attempt to implement “Web 2.0″ technologies simply to drop buzzwords they don’t fully grasp, I’m very proud that Beyond Second is different. We’re not building it to cash in, but to support the community that has rewarded us with a glimpse at some amazing photography.

Mmmmm, Cheeseburgers.

March 6, 2007

Thanks to my friends Kevin and Vid, I’ve got my summer meal planned out. I’ve been informed that we’re going to check out the burgers at Denny’s Beer Barrel Club (so long as they don’t wait until I get up there for PSU football).

I almost feel obligated to try and sell Denny a new Web site, but I’ll really be going to see Vid eat the Belly Buster all by himself :)

Flash 3D Gone Wild

March 4, 2007

I’m simply blown away by the demos done in Papervision3D. Granted, I’m running Flash Player 9 on a Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro (and the interactivity isn’t exactly Virtools), but the animation is the 3D smoothest I’ve seen in Flash yet. I can’t wait to check it out when it goes public.
