Revisiting 5 Pointz

by: Rich Hauck

Dave Robertson brought my attention to the fact that 5 Pointz, a graffiti mecca in Long Island City, has a date with a wrecking ball come September, as the property owner intends to build an apartment complex in its place.

It’s a shame such an enormous canvas is being demolished, though I can’t fault the owner for doing what he wants with his own property. If anything, I suppose everyone ought to appreciate the art he’s allowed on his warehouse. Apparently, he’s promised to allocate space for future graffiti exhibits, which is more than was done to preserve Yankee Stadium.

While in New York, I made it a point to visit 5 Pointz for the first time since 2006. I visited the back of the building and was impressed with just how much the exhibits had changed since my last visit. It’s definitely worth paying some final respects if you get the chance.
